Samenvatting
Cliënten hebben behoefte aan ondersteuning om doelen te stellen en te bereiken. Dit vraagt van de publieke hulp- en dienstverlening een context die niet afstraft, maar die daar rekening mee houdt. Een context die ondersteunt of versterkt. Een context waarbinnen een cliënt zijn zelfsturing zo veel mogelijk kan vormgeven. Onderdeel van die context zijn instrumenten, hulpmiddelen en technieken die mensen helpen bij het stellen en bereiken van doelen en het oplossen van problemen. Chronische stress heeft immers tot gevolg dat doelgericht gedrag lastig is. Mensen vallen vooral terug op routines en gewoonten die niet per se bijdragen aan of zelfs ook maar bedoeld zijn voor het oplossen van problemen. Een gestrest brein vindt bewust, doelgericht en zelfgereguleerd gedrag, waarbij een relatie wordt gelegd tussen een actie en een uitkomst in een veranderende context vaak lastig. Instrumenten gericht op doelbereiking kunnen cliënten stippen op de horizon bieden en ondersteuning bij het uitwerken van de stappen die nodig zijn om daar te komen. Ze kunnen naast ondersteuning ook bijdragen aan het versterken van de executieve vaardigheden die essentieel zijn om doelen te bereiken. Bovendien kunnen instrumenten een rol spelen bij het opbouwen en aanleren van nieuwe routines en gewoonten waardoor cliënten vaker het gedrag kunnen gaan vertonen dat hen helpt in het oplossen van hun problemen en het bereiken van hun doelen.
