Samenvatting

Een 45-jarige obese vrouw gaat, nadat zij jaren niet gesport heeft, weer voor het eerst badmintonnen. Na tien minuten, bij het neerkomen na een sprong voelt ze een heftige pijnscheut achter de rechterenkel. Ze kan niet meer verder spelen. Dit is een kenmerkend verhaal van een patiënt die de achillespees scheurt. Het letsel wordt nog regelmatig gemist in de medische en paramedische praktijk. Toch is het klinisch beeld heel kenmerkend. Dit hoofdstuk beschrijft de belangrijkste symptomen, risicofactoren, de conservatieve therapie en ten slotte de voor- en nadelen van een operatie.
