Samenvatting

Chronische pijn is een complex gezondheidsprobleem omdat verschillende factoren bijdragen aan het ontstaan en in stand houden van de klachten en beperkingen. Patiënten met complexe gezondheidsproblemen consumeren meer zorg en hebben minder goede behandelresultaten. Om een patiënt met chronische pijn de juiste zorg op de juiste plek te kunnen aanbieden, is een inschatting van de aard en de ernst van aanwezige problematiek noodzakelijk. Een valide indeling in de mate van complexiteit ontbreekt tot op heden. Diverse factoren, zoals fysieke en mentale comorbiditeit en/of psychosociale problematiek, dragen bij aan de mate van complexiteit. Echter, de traditionele indeling in WPN-niveaus en ook andere classificatiesystemen zijn nog onvoldoende valide gebleken. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op definities en vormen van complexiteit en factoren die de mate van complexiteit mede bepalen.
