Samenvatting
De inleiding beschrijft nauwkeurig vanuit welke weefsels rugpijn kan ontstaan. Het verraderlijke is echter dat rugpijn lang niet altijd wordt gevoeld op de plaats waar het weefsel geprikkeld wordt. Toch zijn er vier vormen van rug- en beenpijn die nauwkeurig in verband gebracht kunnen worden met de locatie van weefselprikkeling. Dit hoofdstuk geeft een duidelijk overzicht hiervan. Verder wordt uitgebreid de rol van de discus beschreven bij het ontstaan van wat vaak aspecifieke rugpijn wordt genoemd.

Nota bene: Somatische referred pain moet worden onderscheiden van visceral referred pain. In dat laatste geval wordt de pijn veroorzaakt door orgaanstoornissen. Voorbeeld: linkszijdige armpijn bij disfunctie van het hart.

Propionibacterium acnes: een stafylokok die bij iedereen vanaf de geboorte aanwezig is op de huid. Een onschuldige uitingsvorm is acne ofwel jeugdpuistjes. De bacterie kan echter ook postoperatieve infecties van kunstgewrichten of hartkleppen veroorzaken.
