Samenvatting

Of een hoofdstuk over het whiplash-letsel op zijn plaats is in een boek over niet-aangeboren hersenletsel kan worden betwist. De mentale klachten bij een gedeelte van de slachtoffers doen weliswaar cerebrale schade vermoeden, maar of hiervan daadwerkelijk sprake is, staat allerminst vast. Hulpverleners die zich met niet-aangeboren hersenletsel (nah) bezighouden, zullen echter vaak met deze problematiek worden geconfronteerd. In hun dagelijkse praktijk is er een toenemend aantal patiënten dat kampt met chronische gevolgen van het whiplash-letsel. Er bestaat veel controverse over dit onderwerp, en de meningen zijn vaak nogal gepolariseerd. De opvatting dat het een organische aandoening betreft, staat diametraal tegenover de visie dat het syndroom tussen de oren zit. Voor velen is het daarom vaak lastig een geïntegreerde visie te ontwikkelen.
