Samenvatting

Gedachten over de eigen dood zijn bij vrijwel iedereen op de achtergrond aanwezig. Het concrete besef van onze sterfelijkheid kan doodsangst teweegbrengen, die zich vaak uit in een onrustig gespannen gevoel en het idee dat onszelf of onze naasten iets zal overkomen. Doodsangst treedt op de voorgrond als mensen zich bedreigd voelen in hun bestaan, bijvoorbeeld bij een ernstige ziekte, werkloosheid, het naderende of recente verlies van een naaste of bij een ramp. Herneemt het leven weer zijn normale loop, dan bannen veel mensen de dood weer uit hun leven en bezweren zij de angst door de illusie te koesteren dat ze onsterfelijk zijn.
