Ouderenmishandeling wordt door de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) omschreven als ‘… een eenmalige of herhaalde handeling, of de afwezigheid van gepast ingrijpen, in een relatie die geacht wordt een vertrouwensrelatie te zijn en die verwondingen of moreel leed berokkent aan de oudere persoon die er slachtoffer van is’.1−3
