Samenvatting
Er kunnen twee extreme vormen van ernstige hyperglykemische ontregelingen van diabetes mellitus onderscheiden worden: diabetische ketoacidose (DKA) en het hyperosmolair hyperglykemisch non-ketotisch syndroom (HHS). Bij beide vormen van hyperglykemische ontregeling staat insulinedeficiëntie (absoluut of relatief) centraal. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op de predisponerende factoren voor een hyperglykemische ontregeling en de klinische manifestatie. Daarnaast wordt aandacht besteed aan het couperen van hyperglykemische ontregeling.
