Introductie
Het eerste hoofdstuk begint met een beschrijving van de anatomie van de perifere zenuw. Extra aandacht wordt besteed aan het verloop van fascikels (bundels) binnen de zenuw. Duidelijk wordt dat door zenuwcompressie vaak enkele fascikels beschadigd worden, terwijl de rest van de zenuw intact blijft. Dit heeft grote klinische relevantie voor het bepalen van de plaats van de laesie.
Zodra de zenuwvezels hun contact met het cellichaam verliezen, sterven zij af. Dit hoofdstuk beschrijft twee re-innervatiemechanismen: proximaal vanuit de plaats van de laesie, of distaal door middel van collaterale re-innervatie. De symptomatologie van zenuwcompressie wordt besproken, de klinische tests, de beeldvorming en de waarde van een emg-onderzoek. Vervolgens komt de fysiotherapeutische behandeling aan bod. Het hoofdstuk besluit met de operatieve behandeling na totale zenuwlaesies.
