Samenvatting

Het ontwikkelen van kanker kan erfelijk bepaald zijn. Personen en families waarin dit het geval is kunnen herkend worden aan het frequent voorkomen van bepaalde tumoren, vaak op jongere leeftijd, en aan het familiair voorkomen van al of niet zeldzame vormen van kanker. Erfelijkheidsonderzoek kan deze predispositie bewijzen door het aantonen van het causale genetische defect, ook wel mutatie genoemd. Het aantonen van erfelijke belasting voor kanker bij de patiënt wordt belangrijker en biedt zowel prognostische als therapeutische informatie. Daarnaast is erfelijkheidsonderzoek belangrijk om het risico op het ontwikkelen van kanker bij (nog) gezonde familieleden in te schatten. Verder kan het aantonen van een genetisch defect belangrijk zijn bij het maken van reproductieve keuzes.
