Samenvatting

Palliatieve zorg verbetert de levenskwaliteit van patiënten met een levensbedreigende aandoening en die van hun naasten. Het is méér dan terminale zorg en kan al vroeg, zelfs tijdens een ‘actieve behandeling’, ingezet worden. Men spreekt van ‘supportieve zorg’ wanneer deze parallel aan medische technologie wordt gegeven bij een (nog) niet terminale patiënt. Terminale zorg is gericht op de laatste weken. Palliatieve zorg omvat zowel supportieve zorg, terminale zorg als rouwzorg. Palliatieve zorg is ontstaan als reactie op de veelal technische benadering en zinloze behandelingen van ongeneeslijk zieken. Een huisarts met voldoende expertise kan deze zorg zelf geven, rekening houdend met voorafgaande zorgplanning. Zo niet, dan schakelt hij een deskundige in op het gebied van de palliatieve zorg. Euthanasie is zowel in België als in Nederland toegestaan om ernstig, onbehandelbaar lijden te vermijden. Het ingediende verzoek wordt steeds door een tweede arts beoordeeld. Dit is een SCEN-arts in Nederland of een LEIF-arts in Vlaanderen en Brussel.
