Samenvatting

Endocarditis is een ernstig ziektebeeld met een hoge mortaliteit. Bij de diagnostiek speelt echocardiografie een zeer belangrijke rol. In dit hoofdstuk wordt de pathofysiologie van endocarditis besproken. Het klinisch beeld is onmisbaar bij de indicatiestelling voor echocardiografie. De echografische kenmerken van bacteriële endocarditis komen uitgebreid aan de orde.

In dit hoofdstuk wordt tevens de rol van echocardiografie besproken bij het bepalen van de prognose, bij de indicaties voor interventie en tijdens follow-up van endocarditis.
