Introductie
Skiën is een risicosport voor knieën, maar zeker ook voor handen. Dat ervaart deze 39-jarige chirurg als hij ongelukkig op zijn handen terechtkomt bij een val op de skipiste. Oorzaak van het handletsel is vermoedelijk de skistok die hij tijdens de val stevig blijft vasthouden. Hij blesseert zijn duim en de diagnose is dan ook prompt: ‘skiduim’. Dit is de meest voorkomende blessure van de bovenste extremiteit bij skiërs.
Wat is een skiduim precies en hoe onschuldig is het? Uit deze casus blijkt dat niet iedere skiduim hetzelfde is: een bepaald type skiduim leidt onbehandeld zelfs tot definitieve instabiliteit van het metacarpofalangeale-I-gewricht.
