Samenvatting
Impactie van cuspidaten in de maxilla komt voor bij 1% tot 3% van de populatie en wordt twee- tot driemaal vaker gezien bij vrouwen dan bij mannen, zonder aanwijsbare oorzaak voor dit verschil. Bij ongeveer 85% is er sprake van palatinale impactie, bij 15% van buccale impactie. Bilaterale impacties zijn zeldzamer en worden aangetroffen bij ongeveer één op de tien patiënten met geïmpacteerde cuspidaten in de maxilla. Er bestaat geen oorzakelijk verband met een bepaalde angle-malocclusie. Er zijn meerdere behandelopties, die variëren van het in situ laten van de geïmpacteerde cuspidaat tot extractie van deze laatste. Ondanks de vele behandelstrategieën, is er geen gevalideerd algoritme met een voorkeur voor een bepaald behandelingstraject.
In dit hoofdstuk wordt dieper ingegaan op de problemen die kunnen ontstaan wanneer gepoogd wordt de geïmpacteerde cuspidaat in de tandenboog te plaatsen.
