Samenvatting

Een anterieure open beet wordt in de orthodontie vaak een moeilijk te behandelen malocclusie gevonden. Regelmatig ziet men dat een anterieure open beet, die aanvankelijk door een orthodontische behandeling werd gesloten, na enige tijd deels recidiveert. Een ongunstig groeipatroon en disfunctie van de weke weefsels worden meestal aangeduid als complicerende factoren bij het sluiten van de open beet evenals de stabiliteit van het behaalde resultaat op lange termijn.

Op basis van de beschikbare literatuur wordt een overzicht gegeven van de etiologie van een anterieure open beet en zullen de verschillende slikpatronen worden toegelicht. Verder wordt ingegaan op de rol van tonginterpositie of tongpersen bij het ontstaan en/of onderhouden van een anterieure open beet. Vervolgens worden enkele behandelmethoden beschreven, waarbij het concept van orofaciale myofunctionele therapie meer in detail wordt toegelicht.
