Effectiviteit van speekselsubstituten ter verlichting van monddroogte

Samenvatting

In Nederland zijn verschillende mondgels, -sprays en -spoelmiddelen beschikbaar ter verlichting van monddroogte. In een literatuuronderzoek werd gezocht naar wetenschappelijke onderzoeken naar de effectiviteit van deze middelen. Vervolgens werd het gebruik van speekselsubstituten door sjögrenpatiënten onderzocht.

Speekselsubstituten zouden bij patiënten verlichting van monddroogteklachten moeten geven. Op grond van de tot nu toe gepubliceerde onderzoeken lijkt de wetenschappelijke onderbouwing voor de werkzaamheid van speekselsubstituten beperkt. Enkele middelen lijken een, relatief beperkt, positief effect te hebben op de monddroogte. Patiënten stoppen vaak met het gebruik van speekselsubstituten, omdat zij het effect als te gering ervaren en de smaak van de producten tekortschiet.

Geconcludeerd mag worden dat er behoefte is aan de ontwikkeling van meer effectieve speekselsubstituten, waarbij de verschillende doelgroepen met monddroogte nauw betrokken dienen te worden.
