Samenvatting
Er zijn twee typen latexallergie: de type-I-allergie voor latexeiwitten en de type-IV-allergie voor aan het latex toegevoegde chemische stoffen. Deze chemische stoffen worden aan het uit de rubberboom gewonnen sap toegevoegd om het rubber zijn gewenste eigenschappen te verlenen. De allergie voor deze chemische stoffen is een type-IV-contactallergie, die zich uit in eczeem op de contactplaats. De latexeiwitten die in het sap van de boom zitten, kunnen leiden tot een type-I-allergie, met een heel spectrum van verschijnselen, uiteenlopend van milde contacturticaria, conjunctivitis, rinitis tot een anafylactische shock. De type-IV-allergie wordt bevestigd met behulp van epicutane huidtests (plakproeven), de type–I-allergie middels priktests of serologisch onderzoek (voorheen RAST genoemd). Voor de verschillende typen allergie zijn ook verschillende voorzorgsmaatregelen nodig bij toekomstige ingrepen of werk met latexproducten.
