Samenvatting

Er zijn onvoldoende aanwijzingen voor een primair preventief effect van het geven van borstvoeding op het ontwikkelen van atopie gedurende de eerste 4-6 maanden van het leven. Echter de veronderstelde en deels bewezen voordelen van borstvoeding voor de algehele gezondheid van het kind maken dit toch een aanbeveling voor de praktijk. Er zijn daarentegen meer dan voldoende redenen voor het vermijden van contact met (sigaretten)rook voor alle zuigelingen, zeker voor die met een hoog risico op ontwikkeling van allergische aandoeningen. Deze interventies kunnen dan ook aan alle zwangere vrouwen partners en hun pasgeborene geadviseerd worden.
