Dit hoofdstuk beschrijft het proces van medicijnontwikkeling, van molecuul tot patiënt. De verschillende onderzoeksfases worden uitgelegd en het belang van medicijnonderzoek wordt toegelicht. Het hoofdstuk geeft argumenten voor de reden waarom medicijnen duur kunnen zijn, waarom het vele jaren duurt voordat een medicijn op de markt verschijnt en waarom bepaalde middelen niet door ieder farmaceutisch bedrijf gemaakt mogen worden.
