Inleiding

Chirurgie is de hoeksteen van de behandeling van kanker; bij veel maligne tumoren is genezing alleen mogelijk als ze volledig chirurgisch verwijderd worden. Met steeds verfijndere chirurgische technieken is het gelukt de overlevingskansen te vergroten en de morbiditeit van de behandeling te verkleinen. Een voorbeeld is de schildwachtklierprocedure , waarmee men lymfekliermetastasen opspoort zodat de verdere behandeling daarop kan worden afgestemd: deze maakt tegenwoordig standaard deel uit van de chirurgie bij mammacarcinoom. Ook als een tumor is uitgezaaid, kan chirurgie de overlevingskansen soms verbeteren.
