Inleiding

Kanker is een volksziekte. In 2008 werd de diagnose kanker gesteld bij 89.000 Nederlanders, en in 2020 zullen dat er naar schatting 123.000 zijn. Langere levensverwachting, intensievere screening, betere diagnostiek en toegenomen behandelingsmogelijkheden dragen daaraan bij. Een huisarts in een normpraktijk heeft nu gemiddeld ruim 80 patiënten bij wie minder dan tien jaar geleden de diagnose kanker is gesteld, en dat aantal zal toenemen tot 110 in 2020.
