ICT speelt een in toenemende mate een essentiële rol in het ondersteunen van de ontwikkeling, implementatie en evaluatie van richtlijnen.

Beslissingsondersteunende systemen en feedbacksystemen behoren tot de effectiefste instrumenten voor richtlijnimplementatie.

Controle op volledigheid en juistheid van de richtlijn is essentieel om beslissingsondersteuning en feedback mogelijk te maken en kan het beste plaatsvinden tijdens het richtlijnontwikkelproces.

Het gebruik van beslissingsondersteuning en feedbacksystemen in de praktijk is nog beperkt door gebrek aan standaardisatie, complexiteit van ontwikkelprocessen, onduidelijkheid over inhoudelijke en juridische verantwoordelijkheid en acceptatie door professionals.

Er liggen de komende jaren veel kansen om evidence-based medicine te verbeteren met ICT door ontwikkelingen op het gebied van datamining, patiëntgerichte adviezen en ‘decision support as a service’.
