Astma is een aandoening die bij ongeveer 5-10% van de bevolking optreedt. Wereldwijd is de prevalentie van astma aan het begin van deze eeuw verdubbeld. Sinds enige tijd zijn er aanwijzingen dat de toename in prevalentie in de westerse wereld aan het afvlakken is.
