Samenvatting

Hart- en vaatziekten zijn, samen met kanker, de belangrijkste oorzaak van ziekte en sterfte in Nederland. Een op de drie Nederlanders sterft uiteindelijk aan een vorm van hart- en vaatziekte. Onze samenleving zal door de toenemende vergrijzing en overlevingskansen steeds meer te maken krijgen met mensen die met de gevolgen van hart- en vaatziekten moeten leven: tegen 2020 zullen naar verwachting 1,3 miljoen Nederlanders lijden aan een vorm van hart- of vaatziekte (Vaartjes, Van Dis, Visseren & Bots, 2010).
