Abstract
Diep in de hemisferen liggen de basale kernen: de nucleus caudatus, het putamen (samen ook wel ‘striatum’) en de globus pallidus (zie fig. 4-1). Vaak worden ook nog enkele hersenstamkernen tot de basale kernen gerekend, nl. de nucleus ruber, de substantia nigra en de nucleus subthalamicus (Denny-Brown, 1962). Reeds uit de diepe ligging blijkt dat het hier filogenetisch oudere structuren betreft dan de hersenschors (de verplaatsing van cellichamen van het binnenste naar het oppervlak, leidend tot de ‘schors’, is een proces dat laat in de evolutie tot ontwikkeling is gekomen).
