Abstract
Schmidt (1975b, 1976) kent in zijn schematheorie een belangrijke rol toe aan het gegeneraliseerde motorprogramma. Dit programma bevat volgens Schmidt (1976, blz. 46) alle gedetailleerde spiercommando’s die noodzakelijk zijn voor de uitvoering van een beweging. De vraag kan nu worden gesteld of Schmidt hiermee niet opnieuw, maar dan versluierd, een openloop model hanteert. De belangrijkste rol wordt hier immers toch weer toegekend aan de centrale sturing, en in die zin is Schmidts schematheorie in feite een centralistische theorie. Andere opvattingen (Green, 1982; Stelmach en Diggles, 1982; Reed, 1982; Turvey e.a., 1978) gaan er echter in toenemende mate vanuit dat de sturing een meer gespreid karakter bezit, dat wil zeggen dat deze niet alleen plaatsvindt vanaf ‘centraal’ (hersen)niveau doch ook vanaf ‘perifeer’ (hersenstam- of ruggemerg)niveau. Tegen de achtergrond van deze verschuiving met betrekking tot de ‘gezagsstructuur’ in het zenuwstelsel worden nu de oudere ideeën van Sherrington (1947), Brown (1914, zie Miles en Evarts, 1979) en van Von Holst (1937, zie Gallistel, 1980) weer opnieuw bestudeerd.

De term heterarchie is uiterst verwarrend. Behoeld wordt in feite een systeem dat niet in één richting (d.w.z. van hoog naar laag) werkt doch waarbij de controleni-veaus kunnen veranderen (b.v. lagere structuren controleren de activiteit van hogere structuren in het zenuwstelsel).
