Samenvatting

Tot de meest voorkomende somatische klachten behoren diverse vormen van pijn, waaronder vooral hoofdpijn, buikpijn en pijn in het bewegingsapparaat. Gelukkig zijn de pijnklachten niet voor iedereen even ernstig en ervaart slechts een gering percentage mensen beperkingen in het dagelijks leven. Deze personen doen vaak een beroep op medische hulpverleners. Naast beperkingen in het beroepsleven en sociale leven rapporteren sommige patiënten emotionele, cognitieve en gedragsproblemen. Tot het klinische beeld behoren dan angst en depressie, gevoelens van irritatie, frustratie, hulpeloosheid en machteloosheid, overmatig medicijngebruik, slechte nachtrust, en een blijvende vraag om medische hulp. Aangezien er geen onmiddellijke en definitieve oplossing is voor het pijnprobleem, is dit een zeer moeilijk te behandelen groep van patiënten. Doelstellingen van behandeling zijn dan eerder gericht op beheersing van de somatische klacht en verbetering van de levenskwaliteit.
