Abstract

Tot voor kort werd een achteruitgang van de structuur, functie, motiliteit en immuunreacties van het maag-darmstelsel toegeschreven aan veroudering. Geleidelijk aan werd duidelijk dat bij gezonde ouderen het maag-darmstelsel tot op hoge leeftijd zijn enorme adaptatievermogen en reservecapaciteit behoudt en dat pas in het achtste decennium degeneratieve veranderingen optreden.
