Natuurlijke en niet-natuurlijke oorzaken van kindersterfte

Inleiding

Bij jonge kinderen geldt: hoe jonger het kind, hoe kwetsbaarder. Dit is goed terug te zien in de sterftecijfers. In 2010 stierven in Nederland 831 kinderen onder de 5 jaar. Van deze groep waren 695 jonger dan 1 jaar, 509 jonger dan 1 maand en 380 nog geen week oud. Van alle sterfte onder de 5 jaar vond zelfs 26% plaats op de eerste levensdag. Bij kinderen boven de 10 jaar loopt het sterftecijfer weer op, bij de adolescenten grotendeels door hogere aantallen niet-natuurlijke dood.
