Samenvatting

Wanneer bij een kind diabetes wordt ontdekt, gaat het in negen van de tien gevallen om diabetes mellitus type 1 (vroeger vaak insulineafhankelijke diabetes mellitus genoemd). De oorzaak van type 1-diabetes is de vernietiging van de insulineproducerende bètacellen van de pancreas, vaak als gevolg van een auto-immuunreactie. Deze wordt op gang gebracht door nog slechts ten dele opgehelderde omgevingsfactoren, waaronder virale infecties en voedingsmiddelen.
