Hartklepafwijkingen komen vrij veel voor. Ze waren in 2011 (rapport NHS) verantwoordelijk voor 9.539 ziekenhuisopnamen, waaraan vermoedelijk nog een deel van de opnamen voor aangeboren hartafwijkingen en infectieuze hartziekten zou kunnen worden toegevoegd. Ter vergelijking: in hetzelfde jaar werden 27.454 patiënten opgenomen wegens een acuut myocardinfarct.
