De voornaamste lipiden die in plasma voorkomen, zijn cholesterol, triglyceriden en fosfolipiden. Omdat ze slecht in water oplosbaar zijn, worden ze in het bloed uitsluitend aangetroffen als complexen met eiwitten, de lipoproteinen.
