Abstract

Slijtage wordt omschreven als het niet-carieuze verlies van glazuur en dentine (Imfeld, 1996a). Bij het ontwikkelen van slijtage spelen vaak meerdere processen een rol, zoals attritie, abrasie, abfractie en tanderosie. Attritie (het slijten van glazuur of dentine door frictie), abrasie (het slijten van tandmateriaal door interactie van gebitselementen en andere materialen) en erosie (het verlies van tandmateriaal door inwerking van zuren die niet afkomstig zijn van bacteriƫn) kunnen tegelijkertijd optreden en elkaar versterken (The Academy of Prosthodontics, 2005; Imfeld, 1996a; Nunn, 1996). Deze processen kunnen als zowel pathologisch als fysiologisch worden beschouwd, afhankelijk van de hoeveelheid slijtage die is opgetreden in relatie tot de leeftijd van de patiƫnt.
