Inleiding

Van mensen met kanker wordt een groot aanpassingsvermogen gevraagd. Afhankelijk van de aard en ernst van het ziekteproces, de behandeling en de blijvende gevolgen, staat iemand vroeg of laat voor vaak zeer ingrijpende opgaven. Zo is er het leren leven met onzekerheid, het nemen van ingrijpende beslissingen, het omgaan met pijnlijke gevoelens en rouw om het geleden verlies. Verder proberen mensen greep te houden op hun leven, hun gevoel van zelfrespect en eigenwaarde te bewaren en leren ze met vallen en opstaan wat wel en wat niet veranderd kan worden. Verder geven patiënten te kennen dat, om er bij te blijven horen, het contact met mensen zo belangrijk is en je tegen alles in ruimte moet zien te vinden voor positieve ervaringen en nieuwe zin en betekenis.
