Inleiding

Onder hoofd-halskanker worden doorgaans maligniteiten uitgaande van de slijmvliezen van de bovenste lucht- en voedselwegen verstaan. In meer dan 90% van de gevallen betreft het een plaveiselcelcarcinoom. Het hoofd-halsgebied omvat het gebied tussen schedelbasis en sleutelbeenderen. Maligniteiten van de hersenen maar ook de ogen vallen hier niet onder. Schildklierkanker wordt ook vaak als aparte groep beschouwd. Kanker van deze laatste organen, inclusief huidtumoren, worden in de desbetreffende hoofdstukken beschreven.
