Inleiding

Hematopoëse betekent letterlijk bloedvorming. Het is het proces van proliferatie en differentiatie van bloedcellen, zie Figuur 18.1. Dit proces vindt plaats in het beenmerg. In het beenmerg zijn zogeheten stamcellen aanwezig die zichzelf in stand houden en ook zorgdragen voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe rijpe cellen. Proliferatie en differentiatie zorgen ervoor dat continuïteit in de productie van nieuwe cellen blijft bestaan en dat deze cellen in staat zijn hun specifieke functie uit te oefenen (zie Tabel 18.1).
