Inleiding

Radionuclidetherapie is het behandelen van onder andere kwaadaardige aandoeningen door het toedienen van radioactieve elementen, doorgaans gekoppeld aan een dragerstof . Deze stoffen dienen bij voorkeur zo selectief mogelijk door tumoren opgenomen te worden en zo min mogelijk door gezond weefsel, zodat de dosis in de tumor zo hoog mogelijk is, terwijl het omringende normale weefsel zo veel mogelijk wordt gespaard. Bij radionuclidetherapie wordt de stof doorgaans systemisch toegediend: intraveneus of oraal. De eigenschappen van het nuclide of van de dragerstof bepalen hoe de stof zich over het lichaam verdeelt. Een nadeel van het gebruik van radioactieve stoffen is de straling die de patiënt uitzendt naar de omgeving en de kans op een radioactieve inwendige besmetting van familieleden en verzorgers van patiënten.
