Abstract

Verslaving is een psychiatrische ziekte die met behulp van beeldvormingstechnieken in toenemende mate wordt bestudeerd. Nieuwe inzichten op dit terrein geven aan dat een herhaalde blootstelling aan alcohol en/of drugs leidt tot veranderingen in het brein waarbij hersencircuits op micro- en macroniveau progressief disfunctioneren. Om deze ontregelde neurobiologische processen te herstellen vormen symptoomcomplexen (syndromen) die kenmerkend zijn voor de stoornis, aangrijpingspunten voor een medicamenteuze behandeling in de forensische verslavingszorg. Conform een ‘functioneel psychofarmacologisch’ paradigma deze symptomen worden geclusterd in craving, impulsiviteit/compulsiviteit en ontremd gedrag. De huidige stand van zaken is dat er verschillende effectieve medicamenten beschikbaar zijn die ingezet kunnen worden in een breder behandelkader.
