Abstract

De afgelopen decennia is de acute sterfte aan cardiovasculaire ziekten (CVZ) meer gedaald bij mannen dan bij vrouwen. Door de toename in prevalentie van CVZ in de bevolking is er een verschuiving opgetreden naar een groter aantal chronische patiƫnten met cardiovasculaire aandoeningen. De jaarlijkse sterfte aan CVZ in Nederland is momenteel hoger bij vrouwen dan bij mannen.1 Omdat zij gemiddeld ouder worden heeft dit een grote impact op de kwaliteit van leven bij vrouwen op hoge leeftijd. Hoewel zij minder vaak een acuut myocardinfarct krijgen, worden vrouwen vaker getroffen door een ischemisch CVA dan mannen (figuur 2.1 en 2.2).2
