9 Posttraumatische nekpijn: whiplash, imago en verwachtingen

Samenvatting

» Er zijn geen duidelijk omschreven en algemeen geaccepteerde criteria voor het stellen van de diagnose whiplash. Gebruik van de term is dan ook betrekkelijk willekeurig en in de praktijk erg wisselend. Whiplash lijkt een negatief imago te hebben met daarbij passende verwachtingen. De gedachten die mensen zelf hebben over hun klachten of aandoening, zijn echter van het grootste belang. Over het gebruik van diagnostische labels moet daarom niet lichtzinnig worden gedacht. Het achterhalen van individuele overtuigingen en gedachten over de ervaren klachten kan een aangrijpingspunt vormen voor behandeling. Uitleg van een behandelaar en op activatie gerichte therapie kunnen angst wegnemen en daarmee bijdragen aan het herstel.
