Zusammenfassung
Wanneer de primaire functie van de long – zorg dragen voor een adequate gaswisseling – tekortschiet, spreekt men van respiratoire insufficiëntie. Van een partiële insufficiëntie is sprake indien alleen het zuurstofgehalte te laag is (hypoxemie). In geval van een totale insufficiëntie is er naast de hypoxemie een te hoog kooldioxidegehalte (hypercapnie) in het bloed aanwezig. Begrip van de oorzakelijke mechanismen is belangrijk, omdat hiermee de aard en de ernst van de onderliggende aandoening tijdig kunnen worden herkend.
