Behandelaren die werken met ernstig getraumatiseerde mensen worden emotioneel belast. Traumatische ervaringen van cliënten kunnen heftige emotionele reacties oproepen bij behandelaren: afschuw, angst, walging, maar ook een grote positieve betrokkenheid bij de getraumatiseerde cliënt. Uit recent onderzoek (Smith, 2009) blijkt dat traumabehandelaren niet angstiger of depressiever reageren dan andere behandelaren.
