Zusammenfassung
De ziekte van Alzheimer is de meest voorkomende oorzaak van dementie boven het 65e jaar. Op de leeftijd van 80 jaar heeft 20% van de bevolking de ziekte van Alzheimer. Allerlei afwijkingen in de hersenen zijn bij deze ziekte vastgesteld: amyloïd neerslagen, tekenen van inflammatie, oxidatieve stress, hyperfosforylatie van tau-eiwitten, tekorten aan neurotransmitters. Wat primair en wat secundair daaraan is, is nog steeds niet bekend.
