Zusammenfassung

Acuut reuma treedt op in aansluiting op een keelinfectie met een groep-A-streptokok. Karakteristiek is een verspringende polyartritis van de grote gewrichten, met wisselend daarbij chorea van Sydenham, carditis en huidafwijkingen. Mitralisklepstenose, optredend 10 tot 20 jaar na de originele aanval van acuut reuma, is wereldwijd het meest voorkomende verworven hartklepgebrek. In Nederland komt acuut reuma zelden meer voor.
