  • Het begeleiden van mantelzorgers is belangrijk, om hen beter toe te rusten voor hun rol als verzorger, (een toename van) hun eigen gezondheidsklachten zo veel mogelijk te voorkomen, en de zorg in de thuissituatie stand te laten houden zolang dit wenselijk wordt geacht.

  • In een behandel- of zorgplan voor een persoon met dementie dienen ook de problemen, behoeften en mogelijkheden van familieleden in relatie met de patiënt of de zorg te zijn betrokken. Dit geldt ook na opname in een zorginstelling.

  • Het geven van voorlichting of psycho-educatie aan mantelzorgers is met regelmaat geboden gedurende het hele dementieproces, niet alleen in crisissituaties.

  • Wanneer een mantelzorger psychische klachten (zoals depressieve of angstklachten) heeft, is het bieden van voorlichting of psycho-educatie alleen onvoldoende. Een combinatie met psychotherapie en/of respijtzorg is dan aangewezen.

  • De noodzaak tot familiebegeleiding stopt niet na opname van de persoon met dementie in een zorginstelling.
