    Chondroblasten produceren vezels en grondsubstantie (samen: matrix). Chondrocyten zijn niet of nauwelijks actief in de productie hiervan.

    Collageen II wordt vooral aangetroffen in bindweefsel met een hoge concentratie proteoglycanen en water: deze combinatie heeft sterk schokdempende eigenschappen.
