Abstract
Hoewel de woorden ‘spel’ en ‘ernst’ in onze taal worden gebruikt om een tegenstelling aan te geven, is spelen voor kinderen een serieuze bezigheid. Dat wil zeggen dat ze weliswaar geen moment langer spelen dan ze er zin in hebben, maar dat zo láng ze spelen dit belangrijk is voor hun ontwikkeling nu en later. Dat is waarschijnlijk de dubbelzinnige betekenis van ‘mijn spelen is leren’. In de psychologische literatuur over het kinderspel kan men met die dubbelheid niet helemaal uit de voeten. Spel is voor kinderen van levensbelang, maar zij doen het voor de lol. Ook in dit hoofdstuk zal blijken dat dat een combinatie is die maar moeilijk in één theoretisch kader is te vangen.
