Abstract

Marlies is alcoholverslaafd. Ook al weet zij heel goed dat haar overmatig alcoholgebruik ongezond is en ook al wil ze graag stoppen, ze is niet in staat om zonder hulp definitief een punt te zetten achter haar drankgebruik. Dit onvermogen om te stoppen is kenmerkend voor verslaving. In dit hoofdstuk beperken we ons tot de middelenverslaving (ruwweg alcohol- en/of drugsverslaving) en met precieze definities gaan we ons niet bezighouden. We concentreren ons op de vragen hoe en waarom sommige mensen verslaafd raken aan drank, sigaretten, medicijnen of drugs, en waarom het zo verdraaid moeilijk is hier weer van af te komen.
