Samenvatting
● Een partiële kunststof plaatprothese onderscheidt zich van de andere typen partiële gebitsprothesen door de volledig uit kunststof bestaande prothesebasis die in principe uitsluitend steunt op de edentate delen van de processus alveolaris en in de bovenkaak eveneens op het palatum. Ten opzichte van de andere typen partiële gebitsprothesen heeft een partiële kunststof plaatprothese drie voordelige aspecten: het economische aspect, de esthetische kwaliteit en de eenvoud van uitbreiding en aanpassing. Nadelen zijn een vergroot risico op het ontstaan van cariës, gingivitis, parodontitis en prothesestomatitis, op reductie van kaakbot, op migratie van gebitselementen, op stimulering van de kokhalsreflex en op beschadigingen van het basismateriaal. De huidige indicaties hebben een tijdelijk of palliatief karakter of zijn uit nood geboren. Bijzondere varianten zijn de lepelprothese, de partiële plaatprothese met gebogen draadankers of knopankers en de partiële plaatprothese voorzien van versteviging, de flexibele partiële plaatprothese en de partiële plaatprothese die uit twee delen bestaat.
