Samenvatting
Het hart kan echocardiografisch alleen worden onderzocht wanneer zich tussen hart en transducer geen lucht bevindt. Luchthoudend weefsel absorbeert immers het ultrageluid. De plaatsen van waaruit een echo kan worden gemaakt (de akoestische vensters) zijn daarmee beperkt tot links-parasternaal, apicaal, subcostaal, suprasternaal en rechts-parasternaal. Veranderingen in de vorm van de thorax kunnen bij een patiënt aanleiding zijn tot meer of minder, of kleinere of grotere akoestische vensters. Zo kan veel vocht in de pleuraholte met compressieatelectase van longdelen het akoestisch venster zelfs tot de rug uitbreiden.
